In 1789, after a tragic shipwreck at the mouth of the River Tyne, a group of Newcastle businessmen offered a prize of two guineas for the best design of a lifeboat capable of rescuing lives in treacherous conditions. This humble yet profound gesture sparked innovation and led to the creation of the first purpose-built lifeboat, forever revolutionising sea rescue efforts.
Our rum honours this remarkable legacy of ingenuity and community spirit while also paying tribute to the countless brave heroes of lifeboat stations who have since risked and continue to risk their own lives to save others at sea.
